Biography
Laila Torres Mendieta (b. 1986) is a Mexican born artist, researcher and independent curator whose work travels between Mexico and Europe. She holds a BA in Visual Arts from Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas, UNAM (graduated with honors in, 2012) a MA in Art Praxis from the Dutch Art Institute (2015) and a Master’s degree in Critical Curatorial and Cybermedia Studies from the HEAD – Geneve (graduated with honors in 2019). Her research methodology is deeply influenced by the usage of theory-fiction and stand-up comedy as frames to explore non institutional processes of collective entanglement, non/managerial critique and the embrace of crises from a radical standpoint. She uses performance, spoken word and sonic landscapes as technologies to activate synergic exchanges within her body of work. Her research has been present in collective projects such as “travelling communique” a roaming academy, in Serbia, Ethiopia and the Netherlands, “PLUS PLUS ++: Radical Hospitality” at the black box Theater in Norway and “Les indiennes” a project which openly tackles Switzerland’s role in the edification of racial proto-capitalism through the trajectories of textile mercantilism and slavery, which has been featured at LIYD gallery/cultural center in Geneva, Switzerland. She has been recipient of the ArtEZ scholarship to foreign students (2013-2015), the Fundacion JUMEX grant for Foreign Studies (2013-205) and the FONCA-CONACYT scholarship for Studies in Foreign Countries (2017-2019). She was selected as recipient for the 2021 research fellowship at MMCA in South Korea and is currently preparing to present her updated research at Fri Art through Plattform20.
