The Off-Screen and Its Double
Text
In 2019 Ekiem Barbier, Guilhem Causse and Quentin L’helgoualc’h are forming a documentary film crew to shoot a film about encounters with communities of male and female players in the online survival simulation game DayZ. These communities practice role-play, and the filmmakers are going to meet these characters, these avatars. Is it possible to make a documentary film shot entirely within the graphics engine of a video game? How can we tell the story of virtual encounters and the emotions and situations they provoke? Through the technical challenges of filming and the questions and aesthetics they provoke, a strange journey takes shape between reality and fiction. When a person speaks to them on camera in the guise of an avatar, he or she is off-screen, but their reality is yet another off-screen.
